Cookies
Cookies
A cookie is a small text file that is downloaded and stored on the user's computer when the user opens a web page. Cookies are used, for example, to store login details, remember the shopping basket in an online shop, or record how the user moves around the website.
Cookies can be useful for both the owner and the user of a website. The owner of the website can adapt the service based on the information that is stored. For the user, visiting the website can feel more user-friendly and tailored.
Different types of cookies
Cookies can be:
- session or persistent cookies
- first-party or third-party cookies
Session cookies
These are deleted when the session ends, that is, when the user closes the browser. They are used, among other things, to record that a user is on the website and which choices they make.
Persistent cookies
These are not deleted when the session ends. Persistent cookies typically contain information about authentication, language settings and menu preferences. This makes future visits to the website faster and more tailored to the user. Most persistent cookies have an expiry date after which they are deleted automatically.
Third-party cookies
This is a cookie (persistent or session) set by someone other than the operator of the website the user is visiting. Typically these are adverts and banners on online newspapers and the like.
